For some people, seeking a career as a life coach just makes sense. They are helpful by nature, and wish to make other people's lives better by working with them to help them achieve what they want in life. Maybe they have a drive to assist others and have decided that making a career out of it is a great way to fulfill their own dreams as well. If you interested in getting into this type of work, you would do well to consider just what is involved with becoming a life coach.
What is a Life Coach?
According to the ICF, or the International Coach Federation, life coaching is a kind of partnership between a coach and their client. It requires thought provoking questions on the part of the coach, as well working creatively to inspire the client to achieve their full life potential. In other words, life coaching is about supporting your client so that they are able to attain their goals in life.
Before you decide to become a life coach, you might want to speak with established life coaches in your area or online to find out what motivated them to choose this career. You might even book a session with them to see it entails. You can ask them about their initial training, ongoing resources for continuing education, their annual salary, if there are any cons to the job, or things they would have done differently. This is a great way to learn more about what life coaching is all about.
You may find that most of them answer that they chose this field to help others and so they could make a difference in the world. They probably also felt they had the skill set and values to be a successful life coach. Things like being a good listener, being well organized, empathetic, a critical thinker, good at problem solving and having the ability to collaborate. Also a good dose of patience and caring is required.
If you feel that you posses some or all of these attributes and are also committed to helping others one on one, than perhaps you would find life coaching to be a rewarding career.
Other things to consider
Before you decide to make a commitment to becoming a life coach, there are other factors to consider. What kind of training will you take and where will you get it from. There are many online certification courses and trainings available. Since this is a relatively new career field, there are not many, if any, college or university programs in this area, although there are classes that may be helpful to you such as courses in psychology. Also, in all likely hood, you will be self-employed, so taking some university courses in business or finance may be a good idea as well.
Because most life coaches are self-employed, you will need to be sure that you are ready for this aspect. Are you motivated enough to push forward even when it is hard or you are discouraged? Are you able to do all aspects of your business? Not only will you be the coach, you will also be in charge of scheduling, marketing, promotions, accounting and billing. There's a lot involved with being your own boss.
You will also need to decide where and how you will run your sessions. Are you going to have in person clients or work mostly online? And how will you get your clients? You'll need to come up with a strategy for attracting people to work with.
While this may all seem a little overwhelming, don't worry, there are many resources out there to help you with your new career. If you think that becoming a life coach is for you, there are many ways that you can pursue this. The most important thing is to follow your own dream so that you can help others achieve theirs.
